He has a special interest in biomechanics and ergonomics and serves as editor-in-chief of the journal Clinical Biomechanics. He has been involved in the development of evidence-based clinical guidelines and public educational material for a range of musculoskeletal problems. Recent work has concerned exploring the relationship between work and health from an epidemiological and biopsychosocial perspective, with a focus on promoting a positive shift in the culture through novel informational and rehabilitation interventions. In particular, he has been involved with describing the nature of obstacles to recovery and obstacles to return to work for people with common health problems, and how to tackle them. He has undertaken numerous high profile research projects, many of which have been supported by government departments and by industry.
